About the Education Bursary
Women in2 Healing is a network of women prison
leavers, volunteers and academics who seek to further the emotional, physical,
mental and spiritual healing of women inside and outside prison through the
participatory ACTION research processes.
The Education Bursary Fund was officially launched in September, 2009.
The Education Bursary Fund will provide financial support for women from
prison, and their children, to empower their education, in a manner that is
consistent with the mission of Women in2 Healing.
The idea of establishing an education bursary fund arose
during a series of participatory research retreats which we held in the Gulf
Islands of BC. During the retreats in
addition to discussing research design and implementation, we restored old
chairs that were donated by Drs Peter Richards and Kay Sutherland of Deep Cove. We sold nine chairs as part of a silent auction
at the Inaugural Prison-academic-community conference at UBC, Dec 2008. The following year eight
more chairs were restored for Nightshift Street Ministries in Surrey.
The Education Bursary Fund Selection Committee members have
many years of experience in community service, corrections and locating
resources for women inside and outside of prison and are generously donating
their time and expertise to the selection process.
